Where The Magic Happens
Current Serving YGS Council Members
At the Yorkshire Geological Society, we pride ourselves on being diverse, friendly & inclusive. Below is a list of current YGS council members, once you know who we are, come & say hello when you see us at events (or even in the street!).
Oliver Weeks| Indoor Meetings Secretary
"A forever natural science nerd I was always most interested in biology, however my Geology A-level at Greenhead College, Huddersfield, converted me to the Earth Sciences, finally settling in the middle with palaeontology. Thus I journeyed to the perilous south to do an integrated master’s degree in Palaeontology and Evolution at the University of Bristol. Through my work there I became enamoured with palaeoecology and biomechanics focussing my master’s research on the functional evolution of whale jaws. I have also worked on Rhaetian microvertebrate deposits of the fissures in the Bristol area, describing the ecological relationship between these and different localities.
Out of university I became more interested in the practical side of palaeontology focussing on working in a lab or museum setting. After a brief stint as curator at the Yorkshire Natural History Museum in Sheffield I co-founded a fossil preparation business (Emanya Fossil Prep) in Sheffield preparing fossils for clients including for scientific descriptions and museums. My love of the practical side has spilled over into fieldwork and I am now regularly part of excavation teams and have been a team lead on two field seasons at the Cerney Wick Mammoth Graveyard in the Cotswolds.
I originally got involved with the YGS to get back involved in geology locally post-pandemic, and after helping out at Yorkshire Geology Day in 2023 I was asked if I was interested in joining the Council and became a member in September 2024, and I am now the current Indoor Meetings Secretary.
